Harvest Time... Let's EAT!

Do you know the best thing about harvest time? Eating the food you harvested! Well, the SGI is hosting a Local Harvest Cook-off, at the Emporium on November 17th at 5;30 P.M.. Here is some info, if you are considering entering:

There will be a $5.00 entry fee per dish. You are not limited to just one category. We are offering 7 different categories to choose from: Appetizer, Soup, Meat, Vegetable, Vegan, Desert, and Drink. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each category. Judging will be based on localization of food, taste, and presentation. There will be cash prizes. All dishes prepared MUST be made with as many locally grown harvests as possible. An ingredient card MUST be presented, highlighting each locally grown ingredient. If you would like to participate in the cook off, please contact the Center for Holistic Ecology so that we can sign you up.

Also, our Enviromental Science class, got the honors of being awarded with a Certificate of Achievement from the Sonnenschein Green Initiative for September 2009. Andrew and Amanda representatively represented us at the September Green Evening, when the award was given out.

I Promised I Wouldn't Cry

I promised I wouldn’t cry… the Green Evening for October has, sadly, been cancelled. I am not going to cry. I AM NOT going to cry. I might have lost it., if I didn’t know, that instead of the Green Evening, the SGI will be holding (in November) a harvest cook-off, which sounds equally as fun. Seeing as this is a community effort, everyone is invited to join the fun. I could cry from sadness or joy!

(Cyber sobs.) (Cyber snot.)(Cyber Kleenex.)

God (Cyber sob) bless, and— (Cyber sob) live green.

Octopus Heritage Festival

Sorry, I mean October Heritage Festival. So, yours truly, the Green Alliance, set up their handy-dandy Compare-o-Meter, to EDUCATE THE PUBLIC!!! All part of our quest! (Quest! Quest! Quest!) It was quite windy. Even for the octopi. (Sorry, that joke is running thin.) Many a tent was blown away in the mighty gales. But thanks to the aid of duct tape, our set up was just fine and jim-dandy. We’ll be posting some pics soon. So don’t forget to check back often.

P.S.- In my previous post, I stated that we should start defending our eight-legged, under-water friends. I will begin, by giving an example of octopi-human relations: Watch 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Many believe the animal is a squid, but the are wrong it is actually, a giant mutant octopus. (That explains the ten tentacles.) The octopus tries to smash the men on the boat, to pieces… Well, I guess that doesn’t help octopi-human relations.

God bless, and live green!

The Abandoned Octopi

All the poor octopi. They never get nice (very blogged- about) meetings. But, Conservation Conversation is announcing very nice (very blogged-about) October meetings. Sadly, we have no octopus meetings to announce. So here is the info for the October Sonnenschein Green Initiative Meeting, and the October Green Evening.

October 14, 2009 from 12:00 – 1:30 PM. The meeting will converge at the Hohenwald Housing Authority’s conference room, on 107 Allison Ave.

AND

October 27, 2009 from 6-8:30 PM. The Green Evenings are free, open to the public, and are held at the Emporium Cafe- where you can (if you want) get some tasty food.

So, maybe the octopi won’t be abandoned next time. But for now, I say, we should start the uprising, and begin declaring the merits of our eight-legged, under-water, friends. Also, we hope to see YOU at the next SGI meeting and the Green Evening!

God bless, and live green!

Glorious Trash

Howdy everyone!

The Green Alliance, yours truly, have been taking baby-sized steps, (or Hobbit-sized…never mind), to becoming more eco-friendly. We have begun separating our trash to be recycled, we now have “Plastic Only” and “Paper Only” trash cans. Once we save a large amount of this glorious trash, we will haul it all over to one of the various recycling centers near us. We’re also gathering up lots and lots of cardboard to take to our recycling center, where this trash will be made into GLORIOUS TRASH! (You can see pictures of our glorious trash cans at our Flickr page.) We hope you enjoyed reading about our most beautiful rubbish that we collect on our quest! (Quest! Quest! Quest!)

God bless, and live green.

Elvis and Racecars and Bears... Oh my!

What do you get when you have Elvis night at a raceway and Green Alliance members fundraising at the raceway? Well, you get one handy dandy Compare-o-Meter booth, a few super psyched Green Alliance members, a Green Alliance member dressed as Elvis, and another dressed as "Fast Freddy the Racing Teddy"!

Sunday evening, September 6th, many of yours truly, Green Alliance members, could have been spotted at the Tennessee Raceway! We were fundraising to help our efforts in our quest (Quest! Quest! Quest!)! We all had a lot of fun, and if you'd like to see a little bit of it, check out our Video and Pics page at our other Consevation Conversation blog. Or our Flickr pics page for some extra fun. Also, don't forget that September 29th, there will be a Green Evening at the Emporium Cafe from 6:8-30 P.M., there will be more information on this in the future.

Perm (...aculture) People!

Yes,
some members of our bloggers, got to spend a few hours at the conclusion of the Permaculture Summer Series. The students had to do presentations, involving what they learned during the program. There were people who used a retreat, farm, their condominium, or even their suburban house as models for "Permaculture-ifying". Students had to do things like, incorporate Permaculture points, and show what steps they would use to get to the goal they showed. Of course, they would utilize nature, use swales (a depression in the ground that provides drainage), plan gardens, collect rain, and harvest solar and wind energy. The retreat model, decided they would use only compost toilets. (Fun, fun!) The farm, since they have plenty of livestock, would use methane energy. The Nashville condo would border a nearby creek with flowers and shrubs. The regular house would collect rain. The suburban house would use "trash" for such things like, flower planters. I would some up these Permaculture ideas in three words, creative, innovative, and conservatorial.
Those were just the basis, of some of the incredibly thorough presentations. If you would like to know more about many of these subjects or the people behind this project, go to: www.hohenwaldpermaculture.blogspot.com
God bless and live green.

Fellowship of the Green + The Next Meeting Date

Hey everyone,
The next meeting will be March 18th, at the Lewis County Career Center!

And now... THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE GREEN! At the last meeting, we discussed the projects-in-the-works by the Green Initiative. We are in the process of creating a community garden, where the community can come and garden, but we think you knew that. As of right now, it is a very small effort. So if you can help or contribute, seeds or related materials, it would be greatly appreciated. Just leave a comment below if you can.

A very, in-the-works project is "Complementary Currency". We cannot go into detail, as of right now, but it is an effort to centralize capital. It will also encourage support of local business.

Green Waste Management is a very exciting project! This is a local path to use the non- toxic waste to create wetlands which will give back to the eco- system and make homes for our wildlife.

These are just a few projects we are working on. There are many more that we could talk about but, we need a reason to post again! Not really! But yes, there are other projects we are working on.

God bless, and live green!
